about

The latest step in a career at the intersection of electronic music, electro-acoustic manipulation and ambient experimentation, INI’s The Observer Effect is a new project and a fresh start for Montreal artist and producer Frédérick Chicoine. Drawn from sessions covering years of studio practice merging contemporary electronic sound design and the melodic immediacy of live instrument-based composition, The Observer effect showcases an artist in search of new horizons, taking lessons from across the musical spectrum only to disregard the formal constraints of genre.

Equally indebted to contemporary film scores, classic video game soundtracks, the most spaced-out side of post-rock, and the intricate detail of the best ambient releases, The Observer Effect invites careful listening and absent-minded revery in equal measure. “I cherry-picked a mood and tried as best as I could to 'showcase my abilities though these songs” notes the author. “The title alludes to the process of whittling down these compositions and everything seeming “broken” until I played them for others, at which point it started to click. That can be a bit of a metaphor for life, really!”

Tracks like ‘EcoAnxiety’ and ‘Addressing The Counterpart’ draw on an expressive, cosmic take on the acoustic guitar, while ‘Gone Girl’ and ‘Eventful’ lean more heavily towards the cinematic classic synth textures of Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross. The common link throughout the album, however, is a focus on the beauty of chord progressions and synthetic timbres, distancing it from the glut of avant-garde “noise first” releases.

The Observer Effect is an album rewarding repeat listens, a gateway to distant shores and new lands, for anyone seeking a ticket to ride.
